About the Tour

Author's trek

Teriberka — a hike along the beaches of the Arctic Ocean

A self-supported trek with backpacks and tents through the wild tundra of the Barents Sea Arctic coast on the Kola Peninsula.

The 69th parallel north latitude is special on the Kola Peninsula. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, the local tundra is very rich and diverse. Ice blocks during the Ice Age carved the coastline, creating a landscape of причудливых hills, and now the beauty of the wild nature of the Arctic surrounds us 24/7: in front, behind, to the side, underfoot and overhead every minute — this is the peculiarity of the Kola North! There are no tourists or trails on the route, which allows you to completely relax from civilization and reboot.

The peculiarity of the route is that we often make radial trips lightly to rocks, beaches and view points, exploring every corner of the coast of the Arctic Ocean. We set up camp in the most picturesque bays, where we watch whales and seals every year, walk barefoot on the sand. This trek is complete harmony with nature and an opportunity to dissolve in its pristine beauty.

Who is the trek for

The route is perfect for both beginners in tourism and experienced travelers who want to take their time and explore the beauty of the north. At the same time, our journey is not easy: we overcome hills, difficult terrain of the wild tundra and various weather conditions every day.

Daily treks and elevation changes are balanced so that a healthy person without special training can complete the route. Properly selected, technologically advanced gear is essential for comfort on the route.

Trekking area

The village of Teriberka is an old Russian Pomor settlement at the mouth of the river on the shore of the Northern Ocean. It is marked on the map of 1598 by cartographer Theodore de Bry «Arctica and Scandinavia». The Kola Peninsula is marked as LAPPIA. The outlines of the Rybachy Peninsula (Kegor), Kola Bay (Cola), and Kildin Island (Kyldin) can be guessed. Around the peninsula, sailing ships of travelers are depicted — these waters began to be explored five centuries ago.

Ocean gifts

In some bays, you can see submarine torpedoes, rocket stages or whale bones washed ashore. The North Cape branch of the Gulf Stream brings fishing nets and buoys from Iceland and Norway — we collect them for souvenirs.

Animals

The north is minimalist in nature, but bright in manifestations. Animals here are like spirits, soaring over the endless expanses of the tundra. There is a chance to meet a flirtatious fox or a brown bear slowly walking along the neighboring hill. Bears here are not big and afraid of people, so you need to keep the camera ready, otherwise the shot will quickly run away. Everything necessary for safety from animals is available and always at hand.

Gear

You will receive a checklist, detailed gear recommendations, and discounts at outdoor stores.
Снаряжение
Travel backpack, 75 liters
The backpack capacity depends on your experience and the compactness of your gear. On average, for men and women, it's 75 liters. The backpack should fit your size. I recommend: Osprey Aether Pro 70, Tatonka Yukon LT 60+10, Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 60-80, Karrimor Jaguar SA2 Flex Pro 75+15.
Rain cover for backpack
The cover should fully protect a loaded backpack and have wind fixation. I recommend a silicone impregnation.
Windproof tent for the tundra
I will provide my own tent for free or coordinate yours. Winds in the tundra can reach 25 m/s, so only windproof models are suitable for us. For example: Naturehike Cloud Peak 2, 3FulGear Taiji 1, Hilleberg Enan, Hilleberg Anjan 2, Fjallraven Abisko 2, Helsport Lofoten 2.
Sleeping bag (t lim from 0 to -5 °C for men and from -3 to -9 °C for women)
A sleeping bag suitable for your height is preferable, down, for example, Sivera «Iriy» or «Sплав» Graviton Comfort. Be sure to pack in a waterproof bag, usually 12 liters. Temperature: 0...-5 °C (T.lim) for men and -3...-9 °C (T.lim) for women.
Camping mat (R-Value of 2 or higher)
An inflatable mat is preferable, with a thickness of at least 7 cm and insulation of 2 R-value or more. The tundra always has uneven surfaces.
Technical mat
The karimat is used in conjunction with an inflatable or self-inflating mat, for example, Isolon Fitness Flex with a thickness of 5 mm and a weight of 120 g.
Trekking poles
Trekking poles with a clip lock are preferable. It is better to use summer rings.
Lightweight chair for the tent
A chair is a must for sitting in the tent. For example, a Folding Stool weighing 350 g, a Sплав Shell Light chair weighing 675 g, or a Helinox Chair Zero weighing 510 g.
Mug, spoon, bowl
The optimal volume of a mug is 450–600 ml, a bowl is 750 ml. Their total weight in titanium does not exceed 200 g. You can also find lightweight and aesthetically pleasing coconutware.
Water bottle, 0.5–1 l
Depending on the backpack pocket and preferences, we take a soft flask (the best choice is Hydrapack: Stow, Flux, Seeker) or plastic bottles, such as Nalgene.
Dry bags for sleeping bag, clothes and electronics
Dry bags: for sleeping bag — 12 l, for electronics — 7 l, for clothes — 12 l.
Headlamp
It's more convenient to use a lamp with a battery, 400 lumens of power is enough for regular use. I recommend lamps from Fenix and Nitecore.
Mosquito net
The best option for a mosquito net is black, a great option is the Sea To Summit Ultra-Fine Mesh Headnet, weight 23 g.
Одежда
Long-sleeve T-shirt
1–2 pcs. Fine synthetic material is best, but merino wool is also acceptable. This is the main clothing for warm weather. Long sleeves (long sleeve) will protect against midge and mosquito bites, as well as from sun exposure, improve thermoregulation in windy weather and protect the skin from damage by bush branches.
Thin thermal pants
1 pc. The thinnest synthetic thermal pants. They wick moisture away perfectly and provide little warmth. Their purpose is to be used with membrane pants to avoid overheating while moving. They can be used to insulate in combination with softshell pants or used in a sleeping bag on warm nights. I recommend: Sivera «Geta» or «Godyobль», «Sплав» Fresh or Motion.
Medium insulating thermal underwear
Thermal sweater (insulating layer) allows you to combine layers perfectly, it can be used while moving, in the camp and during sleep. Density — 130–180 g/m2. I recommend: «Sплав» Gulf Stream (pullover), «Sivera» Vuyma.
Softshell jacket and pants
Basic trekking clothing. It is best to choose the lightest softshell with a density of 100–160 g/m2. Pants and jacket will provide high breathability and protection against overheating, optimal protection against wind speeds of 5–15 m/s, and also serve as an additional layer when moving in cold weather. I recommend: Sivera «Gran», «Murash»; «Sплав» Action Flex, Vector. Average weight of the jacket in size M: 250–350 g; pants: 170–250 g.
Membrane jacket and pants
Basic protection against rain and stormy wind. Suitable membrane is 2.5-layer or more durable 3-layer (3L) with minimum indicators of 15,000 / 15,000 and higher. In the North, Gore-Tex performs best, but other membranes are also suitable in terms of price/quality ratio. Optimal fabric density is 30–70 den. Weight of the jacket in size M: 300–500 g; pants: 250–400 g. For pants, the self-dump function (long side zipper) is important. I recommend: Mountain Equipment Zeno, SMGear, «Sплав» Balance and brands Norrona, Haglofs, Bergans, Klattermusen.
Insulated jacket and pants made of synthetic materials
Main insulation in the camp and at stops during the day. Down insulation is acceptable, but in the conditions of the North and cold regions of Russia, synthetics from the «active insulation» category (active insulation) with a density of 60–80 g/m2 have proven themselves better. For reference: the weight of the jacket in size M is 350–400 g, pants — 200–300 g. I recommend: Arc'teryx Proton or Atom, Sivera «Faris» or «Ledeny», Norrona Femund Thermo60, Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody 2.0, Mountain Equipment Kinesis, Patagonia Nano-Air Hoody, etc. Insulated self-dump pants (with zippers to put on quickly) should be slightly below the knee length, with insulation of 60 g/m2. I recommend: «Sплав» Quark or Sivera «Ledeny».
Trekking socks
3 pcs. Two- or three-season. Synthetic socks help to wick away sweat, provide compression fit, and protect against blisters. I recommend models from Lorpen, Decathlon, or Sплав.
Membrane socks and liners
2 pcs. Membrane socks are the perfect solution for protecting feet from moisture and cold in the North. Paired with fully leather/nubuck trekking boots, they will keep your feet protected. I recommend: DexShell Running Lite and Ultra Thin Crew (usually run a bit small). They work great with a thin synthetic liner sock (liner), which can be worn under the membrane sock to provide extra insulation and protection against blisters. I recommend: Lorpen Liner, Sплав Liner.
Hat and gloves
Insulation in camp and on the move. Choose a thin and lightweight fleece or Power Grid.
Headgear
Protection against sunburn, mosquitoes and wind. The choice depends on your personal preferences, but my recommendation is a cap with a wide brim or neck protection. It provides the greatest protection and comfort. I recommend: Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap, AONIJIE E4089 and other analogues, for example Aonijie E4610, Kailas Neck Flap, Buff Pack Sahara Cap Acai.
Buff
A favorite accessory of a hiker. Protects the neck, and if necessary, the back of the head and ears from the wind. Used both on the move and in the camp and during sleep. Material — thin, summer, like Coolmax or CoolNet.
Общее
First aid kit
Medicines tailored to individual needs, a roll of adhesive plaster, an elastic bandage/knee pad, etc.
Documents
Passport, compulsory health insurance policy in waterproof packaging.
Toiletries
Toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper.
Обувь
Trekking boots
For the tundra, fully leather boots of medium stiffness are ideal, such as Meindl Kansas, Paradiso, Hanwag Tatra II. The boot should be about 1.5 sizes larger. I recommend trying on and buying them immediately with good Sidas Outdoor insoles: they will relieve excessive stress on your feet and reduce blisters.
Second footwear for wading, camp, hotel
Due to the deep moss, I recommend closed 'crocs' or short EVA boots from hypermarkets 'Auchan', 'Leroy Merlin', 'O'Key'. Weight — up to 350 g.

Exactly a week has passed since we returned from our UNFORGETTABLE trip... and I still can't get over the Kola Peninsula!

No wonder you fell in love with it and devoted so many years to this region. I must say that the north is the north, but the way you choose routes, how you plan each day, the evenings in the camp filled with information and atmosphere — it's a whole different art form! I give you a high five! I not only visited this polar land, but also got to know its history, as if I went on an excursion :))

Anyway, with you, even to the ends of the earth :) we just need to improve the gear ;)

p.s. in March, reserve a spot for me in the ski trek
Olga Koltsova
The landscapes and views are breathtaking to the core and even further!

You look in one direction, there the tundra begins to shimmer with colorful hues, look the other way — endless sea, even an ocean with its inhabitants (seal pups, cetaceans will accompany almost the entire journey).

I consider this route one of the best in terms of effort and beauty seen.

The trek itself is very conveniently organized, with accommodation on the first and last days. Comfortable transfer. Special thanks for the good varied food on the route!
All stops are in very beautiful places, although it's hard to find anything ugly there.

I want to highlight that Pavel not only leads the way, but also tells about these places from a geographical, historical, and even ethnographic point of view! Great thanks for these stories, it was very interesting!

I highly recommend this trek to fall in love with the Kola Peninsula for a lifetime!

Trek 'Teriberka — Beaches of the Arctic Ocean'.
I learned about this trek случайно, from an ad on the YouTube channel of hiker Vladimir Chaikin, and immediately wrote to Pavel about my desire to go on this trek. Pavel got in touch with me, told me about the nuances of the trek and the necessary gear. To be honest, I was afraid that the second half of August in those parts would be damp and cold, so I tried to 'conjure' good weather.

The journey began with briefing at the hotel, where Pavel instructed us and handed out bags with provisions, also given were flares and a wind-resistant tent with many additional guy lines.  The next day we set off for Teriberka, where the route started, the weather was gloomy at first, but the 'conjuring' did work, and almost the entire route was accompanied by good, dry, and warm weather. It rained only a couple of times, and then only after we had set up camp.

The whole route consists of transitions from 'hill to hill'. Each time, climbing another hill, we were greeted by an amazing view of the lakes, other hills, and of course the Barents Sea, underfoot is practically dry tundra covered with moss, lichen, and berry bushes, mostly blueberries and lingonberries, less often cloudberries. The berries are ripe and tasty.

We covered from 6 to 13 kilometers a day with backpacks, had several half-days and one full day off. In addition to backpacking, we went on small radial trips, lightly loaded, to places with exceptionally beautiful views. We saw whales and seals.

The organization of the trek is beyond praise, the food is excellent and quite sufficient, the issued tents fully justified their wind resistance. In general, the trek was a success, exactly what I wanted. Many thanks to the guides, Pavel and Anya, for this interesting and memorable trek.

There are so many impressions that words cannot describe them, because the trek was perfect and unforgettable. I'm still overwhelmed by the experience, there are so many emotions)

I was surprised by the well-thought-out organization, I didn't have to think about anything, I just enjoyed the nature of the north and the good company.

Pasha and Anya, you are the best)) Thank you so much for your warmth and professionalism.

Thank you for an amazing trek! I'm thrilled))
Mikhail Tsoi

It was an unforgettable adventure, where once again the Kola Peninsula revealed a new facet, as always taking your heart with it and into it forever.

And as every time on the trek - the best company. Though here this characteristic is more than justified.

The resident wizard namesake whispered incredible (at least extremely unlikely) weather. My special thanks to him!

The animal world showed off to the fullest. A fluffy (not like our Moscow ones - no offense to them) brazen fox tried to beg for food or entertainment for two evenings. The first is out of the question - it's not possible. And as for the second - as best we could - I hope the chases and screams entertained Patrikeevna.

Minke whales, seals, and sea lions put on a show in the sea. Arctic cyanaea washed up by the tide were seen on the beaches. Hawks soared in the sky, and snowcock hid in the cliffs.

Huge thanks to Pasha and Anya for this unbearably beautiful week! See you again!

Viktoria Isaeva
After yet another delight at what I saw, I found myself wondering: 'Yes, what else could there be?!! It seems like the maximum possible.' Feel as if you're in a lost world or a participant in a documentary about the formation of our planet, whichever you prefer! This is definitely something you need to experience and see with your own eyes!
Karolina Kalashnikova

Having once attended Pavel's lecture, it became immediately clear — this is a competent guy, with whom one can go to the ends of the earth. The School of Tourism confirmed this, so when I saw the story about recruiting a group for the hike in winter, my summer plans became clear and specific)

I was very glad to meet the second guide Anna, to find myself in her caring and gentle hands, which fed us very tasty)

I was impressed by the personal approach to each participant, the preliminary call, information on how and when it's better to get there, answers to all possible and sometimes stupid and silly questions, help and support in any situation, a useful cheat sheet for girls about trekking subtleties.

What's nice is that there was no strict timing and жёстких conditions on when and how much to walk, we adjusted the route a couple of times to enjoy and savor the atmosphere more)

Special thanks for the pace of the march, it was such that there was no need to run and break through the tundra like a reindeer, but to walk at a pleasant pace and still have time to look around and admire the hilly expanses.  The group was always together and did not separate during the march.

As for the organization — everything is clear, thoughtful and provided for. Nice little things — bars for snacks, encouraging candies on the ascent to the hill, souvenirs to remember at the end of the trek, and always a smile and positivity)

Thanks to Pavel and Anna for the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the tundra, to step away from ordinary life and immerse yourself in Arctic Zen, to enjoy the harsh, gloomy, but incredibly soul-stirring landscapes of moss, stones, lichen and crystal clear lakes. To breathe in the sea breeze, to immerse yourself in the mist of fog and to bask in the constant unsetting sun of the North. This adventure will be remembered by me for a long time with warmth and love.

Ilya Nastyushenko
A beautiful route that I would hardly ever take on my own. I would like to note the comfortable pace of movement and good places for camping. But for me, the most important thing is that this trip left яркие, positive, long-lasting memories. The guides and participants were extremely interesting, diverse and pleasant to communicate with.

I am extremely grateful for the organization of this trek.

I really hope that the stars will align again and we will go somewhere.
Anna Rodionova
You live in the city, a year passes and your brain becomes like Sméagol from The Lord of the Rings. The time comes to go on a long journey.

You step on the reindeer moss, sinking ground made of lichen, bog moss and crowberry. Under the weight of your backpack, your feet sink into the soft surface. Balancing like this every new day, you continue your journey, making your way through huge boulders covered with lichen. While the scorching sun exhausts your body, the mosquitoes arrange as many dances as possible, checking how much your nerves have been affected by the environment you chose in civilization.

The tundra is the perfect place to recover. In one day, you can experience all the weather conditions. So the sun suddenly gave way to rain and icy wind. No longer complaining about mosquitoes and midges, but you are already shaking from the cold. To cross the ford, you untie the laces of your boots, and your hands are shaking like after a withdrawal, and your teeth are chattering. Surprisingly, after the cold river, you cheer up and get warm from the excitement (I haven't overcome my fear of water yet).

Thirteen other 'hobbits', eager to reset, share this path with you. Here, you won't be able to put on a mask and pretend. Here, you are real, 'naked'. Here, everyone will see how much you are stuck in the city routine. But it is all these conditions, this entire environment that can shake you up. At the end of your journey, you begin to feel that the inner Sméagol has dissolved.

For the first time, it happened when I was a girl and I came to the sea with my first real salary.. it conquered me, and I thought, yeah, this is mine, so beautiful and warm! I said I would live by the sea! But.. Then I saw the mountains! And then I was conquered by the incredible force, height and power of these ancient giants! Of course, I screamed: I'm staying here! And now the North has happened... by chance, I ended up on the Kola Peninsula, and I think it accepted me, gave me the best warm days, the tundra embraced me with the sun, laid the softest reindeer moss, quenched my thirst with water and fed me with berries.. what else do you need? As for you.. hold the northern lights!

I couldn't imagine that everything would be so perfect! We stood at the edge of the world where there's nothing further.. the wind of the Arctic Ocean didn't wound with cold, it gave a pleasant coolness on a hot day... The most incredible feeling, of course, is that we were the only ones there.. it was as if we were the discoverers of these places!

And, of course, this wouldn't have happened without an incredible guide, the best in the North, Pavel Rudenko and Anna Migalina. With great love, they tell and show the North! They are truly awesome guides! Together with the tundra, they embraced us and gave us an unforgettable adventure!

The North is now in my heart, which means I will return.
Alexey Zolotov
What can I say about the beaches of the Arctic Ocean? They're Amazing.
What can I say about the Mountain Tundra? She's Magical.

This is the fourth time I've been to these places, they respond as my place. I've been here in a storm, all the hiking week and sunny days, and for me these places are infinitely beautiful.

This trip was also wonderful by our organizers Pavel and Anya. It is very pleasant to walk with people who share a love for these places. And I will say from experience, Pavel and Anya are invaluable organizers because their experience is not based on rumors and popular rumor, they know what they are saying and what they are talking about.

Thank you so much for a great hike!
Nadezhda Martos
There is an amazing gift to discover the world in all its beauty, when small details create an atmosphere of fullness, when the air without smells and sounds expands the space, when the invisible world of animals gives a full sense of his presence nearby.

When a person is at peace and in harmony with himself and his comrades, Pavel Rudenko possesses this gift, having discovered for himself and many tourists the Arctic - the Kola Peninsula, where there is a special force of attraction, its own power and beauty.

A passionate person, very reliable, educated, friendly, open-minded, ready to share his experience and warmth, constantly expanding his world, next to whom it is just very pleasant to be in communication. I want to keep this communication, so Pavel and I go on the next hike over and over again, plunging into the state of northern, but warm, friendly moments of real rest.

The route after which you will definitely fall in love with the tundra is any hike with Pavel along the coast of Kolsky. It will suit and appeal to already "found" people, and with them those who are just gaining experience and even those who are generally recovering from a hike for the first time.

The most affectionate north you can think of.
Alexandra Lewontin
I was planning a harsh hike through the mountain tundra, but in fact I lived this week in incredible care, as if I had a chicken under my wing, and in the stunning beauty around me.

The tundra turned out to be an incredible place. It would seem that there is a basic set of plants, mosses, lichens, rocks, lakes and streams, but behind each hill a new breathtaking view was waiting for me. And also the sea.

At some point, I caught myself thinking that I was almost running with a big backpack to see what was next. For the whole time that February has been going on, for the first time I was able to exhale to the end and even got tired of smiling.

I am very grateful to the wonderful Pavel Rudenko and Anna Migalina for this fairy tale and their care, as well as for their professionalism. You guys are the best! Rumor has it that Pasha still has places for other trips this summer - guys, don't miss your chance)
Anastasia Kovshova
I've never liked writing reviews. It always seemed that it was necessary to find the right turns of speech so that everything sounded beautiful and visually pleasing to the eye.. but these people, with whom I shared a week of my life, will forever be fixed in my memory)

Once again, I am sincerely grateful to the universe for bringing me together with such bright, charismatic personalities)

Thank you, my dear little people, for being with me the whole trip.

FAQ

Can I handle the workload on the trek?
It largely depends on your experience, physical fitness, and mental attitude. Carefully study the program — each itinerary has not only its own difficulty category, but also specifies daily distances and elevation gain. It's important to choose an itinerary that is optimal for you in terms of workload. You need to consider the weight of the backpack, the need for acclimatization, climate, and the duration of the active part of the trip. That's why we pay so much attention to each application — we consult with the guide and select the appropriate route for you.
How much does the backpack weigh?
It depends on the route, but on average, it's between 15 and 21 kilograms. Women's backpacks are usually lighter than men's. The weight of the backpack includes your personal belongings and the gear we provide: tent, sleeping bag, mat, and part of the food rations. The weight of our gear usually does not exceed 10–15 kilograms. Don't be alarmed by the heavy weight — a properly fitted backpack distributes the load so that it's much easier to carry than it seems. If porters or pack animals assist on the trek, your backpack's weight will be significantly lower! With maximum packing light, you can walk with just a light daypack of 5 kilograms — with the necessary things for the day and some snacks.
How do we handle hygiene on the trek?
On most routes, we wash in streams and lakes almost every day. The temperature of mountain rivers and lakes can be low — around 3–5 degrees, but if the weather is good, you can even swim! If you want to feel more confident, especially on long treks, start hardening yourself in the city. For washing, we recommend taking eco-friendly products to avoid harming nature. Guides have portable toilet shovels for the toilet — we'll show and tell you everything on site! We don't bury paper and hygiene products, but take them with us, for example, in individual garbage zip-lock bags. We recommend taking wet toilet paper with you — it uses less and provides additional hygiene. If possible, we always organize a bath at the end of the trek or make our own portable bath right on the route during one of the rest days.
How is the situation with drinking water?
On each route, we think in advance where we will collect water. Most often these are springs and clean streams, sometimes we use filters or boil water. Guides will always tell you which sources are safe to drink from and which ones it is better to avoid (for example, if there may be animals upstream). It is important to drink regularly — do not wait until you are very thirsty. If you need to replenish water or take a break, just say so — we will always find a convenient moment to stop.
Are there any wild animals on the route? Do I need to take self-defense equipment?
In some hikes, the likelihood of encountering a bear or other wild animal is high, but there is no need to be afraid of it. Each guide has protective equipment — a flare or a rocket launcher, there is no need to buy them yourself. The main thing is to follow the guides' instructions carefully. The bear, despite its sullen appearance and impressive size, is a very secretive animal that does not seek out encounters with humans.
How is the food organized during the hike?
The guides buy the necessary products in advance and make up a layout, taking into account the number of people and dietary restrictions of the participants. In the morning and in the evening there are full hot meals, and during the day, during the transition, there are hearty snacks with hot tea. The basis of the hiking cuisine is cereals, pasta and legumes. We complement the dishes with meat, cheese and vegetables, most often dried. This way, the products weigh less and last longer. In addition, there are prepared snacks: nuts, dried fruits, energy bars. And something sweet for the evening tea before bed! If you have allergies, intolerance to certain foods, or follow a certain type of diet, we can easily adapt the hiking menu for you, but please let us know in advance. We will ask you about this in the questionnaire after you make the prepayment.
How is everyday life organized? Do I need to do anything at the camp?
Our guides take care of everything — they prepare meals, make a fire and set up the camp. You will need to put up your own tent — on the first stop, we will definitely show you how to do it so that you can manage on your own later. The time for getting up, breakfast, and setting off is usually agreed upon by the guide the night before. On the way, we take short breaks and stop for lunch. Upon arriving at the next stop, you set up your tent, while the guides prepare dinner. In the evening, we share our impressions over a cup of hot tea and go to rest. If the itinerary includes a rest day, getting up may be later than usual — you can relax in the camp or go on a day trip with the group. If you want to help — for example, collect firewood or bring water — the guides are always happy to receive support. Just say if you want to learn something new or participate in everyday activities!
