Trekking first aid kit

As in the advertisement, pack your first aid kit and sleep peacefully)

To pack a trekking first aid kit, you need a good imagination about troubles, plenty of experience, or Google)) My first aid kit has changed a lot, been improved, and optimization is still going on. I've prepared a list of medications in a table and can share it with you!)

Weight

I'm not worried about weight and volume, the peace of mind that in case of illness or injury I can help myself or my partner is more important. In solo trips, I always use full equipment.

To reduce weight, I just take only the necessary amount of medication, for example, for a week of trekking — 7 tablets of Mezim. The calculation is simple: if on the first day I have digestive problems, I take no more than one tablet a day; if the problem persists throughout the trek, I can safely treat myself throughout the trek. I take ointments that have already been used halfway at home, hydrogen peroxide in a small bottle, etc.

On the trek to Seydozero, I decided to reduce the weight and not take sunscreen, the forecast was 0 — +7 and daily rain, cloudiness. But the weather changed dramatically, and the sun was scorching from dusk to dawn, every day +20.

What's important

In everyday life, I don't pay attention to scratches, etc., but on a trek, you need to carefully monitor all injuries and treat them thoroughly. Even a small scratch on a finger can become inflamed, fester, and it will hurt to take a trekking pole, an ax, eat, set up a tent, and light a burner. If your foot starts to rub, stop immediately, put on a plaster, adjust the sock, and tie the boot. This problem is common in group treks. You don't know people well, it's uncomfortable to ask them to wait, etc., but you must do it, otherwise you will slowly limp, causing pain to yourself and slowing down the overall pace on the route.

Before the trek, you need to cut your toenails, otherwise there will be pain and blue fingers, and if the trek is longer than a week, be sure to take scissors or nail clippers with you.

First of all, think about what you will use most often. For me, it's a spray against midges/mosquitoes/ticks, Spasatel balm for skin damage, sunscreen, pills for the stomach, plaster, cream for chafing and dry skin, in the wind it dries out and cracks badly.

I tape the pills on the inside with scotch tape, as the gear puts pressure on the first aid kit and often pills are squeezed out of the strip or the film just tears.

In winter, you need to be careful with liquids, almost everything freezes. For example, Albucid and Naphthyzin turn into ice, and you have to waste time and warm them up in your inner pocket.

I wanted to run up Mount Molodezhnaya in Kazakhstan in one day, without acclimatization. I thought that if I hurried, the ascent from 2,500 m to 4,100 m and back to 2,500 m would be fine, with a maximum of a mild headache. But at the beginning of the descent, I got hit by altitude sickness, and it was so bad... Nausea, the brain throbs, the feeling of high temperature, and poor perception of reality. Aspirin didn't help much. I went down by force of will, suffered all night, came to my senses after a day and a half. Now I know that altitude sickness hits quickly, and I take Diacarb and a pulse oximeter with me.

Before the trek

Sometimes before the trek, I take a course of vitamins: Eleutherococcus, Echinacea, vitamin C, or a complex of vitamins, Cycloferon.

Mandatory physical training: running, exercises, stretching.

First aid kit for specific conditions and tasks

The first aid kit is adapted for my treks, which are usually up to 3,000 m high, less often up to 5,000 m. From the equator to the north, from 7 to 30 days. The number of tablets is determined by the number of participants, in my case it's solo or вдвоем, rarely in groups, like in a mountaineering camp. There the main first aid kit is kept at the base, and only a small one is taken with us for emergencies when climbing.

I don't have medical education, this is just an example of my first aid kit. Most likely, you will need to adapt it to your tasks.

Download detailed Excel table

You can download an Excel table from my Yandex Disk, it has detailed information about indications, method of use, side effects (info taken from the site https://www.rlsnet.ru).

The table is convenient to use when packing, just mark with a tick in the first column or with color what you have and what you need to buy.

Compeed, like second skin, lasted a week and came off only when crossing the ford. Ordinary plasters constantly come off and peel off on the leg, now I use them on my hands.
